There are two main types of workplace sexual harassment — quid pro quo and hostile work environment. Quid pro quo harassment occurs when some type of benefit is offered contingent upon sexual favors. Usually, this type of sexual harassment occurs between a supervisor and a subordinate.

Sexual harassment that creates a hostile work environment occurs when there are frequent unwanted sexual comments or advances. Examples include displays of inappropriate or offensive materials, sexual jokes, or persistent communications.
